Are You a High-Level Athlete or Skilled Performer? Film and TV Productions in New Zealand Need You

You've spent years — maybe your whole life — mastering your discipline. You train when others don't. You compete at a level most people can't match. And you've probably never once thought that what you do on the field, in the water, on the track, or on the bike could put you on a film or TV screen.
It can. And when it does, productions come to us.
This is one of the most specific roles we represent at NZAT — and it's not for everyone. But if it's for you, we want you in our books.
What Is a Skilled Performer in the Screen Industry?
A skilled performer is an athlete or specialist who is hired by a film, TV, or commercial production to perform their real discipline on camera.
This isn't about acting. It's not about being photogenic or knowing how to hit a mark. It's about being genuinely exceptional at something — and being filmed doing it.
Productions come to NZAT when they need:
A surfer who can actually charge serious waves for an action sequence or commercial
A sprinter who can deliver a genuine explosive start and full-speed run on camera
A gymnast who can perform real skills — not approximations — in a studio or on location
A dirt biker or MTB rider who can handle technical terrain at speed
A skater — street, vert, or longboard — with a real trick repertoire
A swimmer or free diver for underwater sequences
A parkour or free running athlete for urban chase or action scenes
A climber, martial artist, dancer, rower, boxer — any discipline where the performance on camera needs to be the real thing
The list is as varied as sport itself. If you compete or perform at a high level, there is a production somewhere that will eventually need someone exactly like you.
Why Productions Come to NZAT for This
The honest reason is simple: you can't fake elite sport on camera, and productions know it.
When a director needs a genuine aerial on a snowboard, or a surfer dropping into a heavy wave, or a gymnast executing a clean back handspring — a standard actor or extra won't cut it. They need the real athlete. And they need to find that person quickly, reliably, and through someone who understands both the screen industry and the sporting world.
NZAT has built a reputation in New Zealand as the agency productions call when they need skilled and action performers. We understand what productions are asking for, and we've done the work to build a roster of real athletes across a wide range of disciplines.
When your discipline comes up — and it will — we want to be able to put you forward immediately.
What Does a Booking Actually Look Like?
Skilled performer bookings vary more than any other role we represent. Depending on the production and what's needed:
It could be a single day — a commercial shoot where your discipline is the centerpiece of the ad
It could be multiple days — a feature film or TV series that needs recurring athletic performance across several sequences
It could be in a studio, on location, or at your home ground — wherever your discipline is best captured on camera
The rate is negotiated based on what's required — the complexity of the performance, the duration, and the nature of the production all factor in
We'll always discuss the full picture with you before any booking is confirmed. No surprises.
What Level Do You Need to Be?
This is where we're direct: we represent skilled performers at a minimum of national level, with a strong competitive record behind them.
We're not looking for people who are passionate about their sport. We're looking for people who are exceptional at it — with results, credentials, and a track record that prove it. When a production contacts us needing a specific athlete profile, we need to be able to say with confidence that the person we're putting forward can genuinely deliver under camera conditions.
That means:
National-level competition results — minimum
A strong palmares — a real record of performance in your discipline
Current, active fitness — not past peak, but performing now
If you're not quite at that level yet but are heading there, keep training. Come back to us when you are. We'd rather have you in the right category than place you in a situation where you can't deliver.
Do I Need Any On-Set Experience?
No. On-set experience is not a requirement for skilled performer bookings.
Productions that reach out to us for this type of role understand they're hiring an athlete, not a trained background performer. You'll be guided by the director, the camera team, and sometimes a stunt coordinator if the sequence involves any safety considerations. Your job is to do what you do — on camera, on direction, repeatedly if needed.
What helps is a calm, professional attitude, the ability to take direction and adjust your performance when asked, and the physical consistency to repeat the same movement across multiple takes. Athletes who compete regularly already understand this — it's just performance under a different kind of pressure.
Practical Things to Know Before You Apply
Is there a joining fee?
Our standard joining process applies — however, the joining fee is waived if you can provide evidence of national-level performance in your discipline. Competition results, federation membership, ranking documentation — anything that confirms your level. We take this seriously because the productions we work with trust that our roster is the real thing.
How often will I get booked?
Honestly — it varies. Skilled performer bookings are production-specific, and we can't predict when your discipline will be required. Some athletes on our roster get called multiple times a year. Others wait longer for the right production to come along. The point of being in our books is that when it happens, we can put you forward immediately. You won't miss the opportunity because you weren't registered.
Do I need a car?
Yes. Shoots can take place at various locations across New Zealand, and you'll need your own transport.
What if I'm also interested in action extra work?
If your athletic background overlaps with what we look for in action extras — martial arts, combat sports, gymnastics, dance — you may be suited to both categories. Mention this when you get in touch and we'll assess your full profile.
Is This the Right Fit for You?
Ask yourself honestly:
Are you over 18, currently competing or performing at national level or above in your discipline?
Do you have a strong record — results, rankings, or credentials — that backs that up?
Are you physically at your peak or close to it right now?
Are you open to being filmed performing your discipline, taking direction, and repeating your performance across multiple takes?
Are you okay with bookings that are occasional and production-dependent — not a regular weekly income?
If yes — we want to hear from you.
If you're a passionate amateur who trains hard but isn't yet competing at national level, action extra work or stunt work may be a better starting point. Come back to us when your results match the roster.
